Turkish Ambassador to Canada
Ambassador Babalı joined the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1995. A career diplomat, Mr. Babalı was assigned to Turkish missions in Bulgaria, the US (Houston -1999-2003, Washington DC 2007-10) and the UK. He served at the Department of Bilateral and Multilateral Economic Relations and as Deputy Chief of Cabinet to the Turkish President between 2003-06 in Ankara. Mr. Babalı was the Director of the Department of Human Resources before his arrival in Canada, responsible for personnel issues and opening up new diplomatic missions. Fluent in English, Bulgarian and Russian, Ambassador Babalı, holds an MA degree from School of Oriental and African Studies of the University of London and a PhD from the University of Houston in Political Science and was a Fellow at Harvard University’s Weatherhead Center for International Affairs between 2009-10. He is the author of numerous academic articles mainly on energy geopolitics in Eurasia and a book titled “Caspian Energy Diplomacy: Since the End of the Cold War”. He came to Canada with his family. He is married with three sons.
