Ryerson School of Journalism, world affairs columnist for the Toronto Star, and former head of Al Jazeera English and CBC News
Tony Burman is former head of Al Jazeera English and CBC News, and now teaches at Ryerson University's School of Journalism. In September 2011, he was appointed Ryerson's Velma Rogers Graham Research Chair in News Media and Technology. He also writes a weekly world affairs column for The Toronto Star. During his time as Managing Director of Al Jazeera English in Qatar from 2008-10, the network’s worldwide audience reach more than doubled to 220 million households. In 2010-11, he was Al Jazeera's head of strategy for the Americas based in Washington. Before Al Jazeera, he spent more than three decades as an award-winning news and documentary producer at CBC News , including more than seven years as its editor-in-chief. He was executive producer of The National for eight years and senior documentary producer for CBC’s The Journal. Working in more than 30 countries, he produced many documentaries which were rebroadcast on the BBC, PBS and other international networks.
