CIC-Toronto Branch presents: Craig Skjerpen
Location: Dominion of Canada General Insurance Building
4th Floor Meeting Room, 165 University Avenue, Toronto, M5H 3B8
Event Description: Please come join us for an exciting talk by Commander Craig Skjerpen on the Canadian Forces’ involvement in the Libya mission. As commanding officer of the frigate HMCS CHARLOTTETOWN, Cdr. Skjerpen spent five months off the coast of Libya as part of the multinational naval force tasked with enforcing UN Security Resolution 1970. Under his command, HMCS CHARLOTTETOWN hailed and boarded vessels to enforce the arms embargo, escorted vulnerable ships, and on several occasions lead Surface Action Groups to repulse pro-regime attacks on the besieged rebel city of Misrata. On one of these occasions, the ship was engaged by shore-based artillery, becoming the first Canadian warship to come under hostile fire since the Korean War. This event is sure to offer a unique insider’s perspective on Canada’s role in this historical operation.
