EVENT SOLD OUT Canada Departs Iran: Folly or Foresight?

Date: September 27, 2012 | 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

CIC-Toronto Branch presents: John Mundy

Location: Albany Club of Toronto
91 King Street East, Toronto ON, Canada, M5C 1G3
Event Description: Join a conversation with the last Canadian Ambassador to Iran, John Mundy, expelled by Iran in 2007, who will discuss the decision by the Canadian government to close our embassy in Tehran. Foreign Minister John Baird characterized Iran as, “the most significant threat to global security in the world”. But does Iran pose the threat to the world that Minister Baird suggests, and is this the right course of action for Canada or for the situation in the Middle East? The international community remains concerned about the nature of Iran’s nuclear program and non-compliance with International Atomic Energy Agency guidelines. Come engage with Ambassador Mundy in a timely discussion about Canada, Iran and our foreign policy in the region.

Speaker’s biography:
John Mundy is a former Canadian diplomat with more than 30 years of experience in Ottawa and abroad. He held senior diplomatic appointments in Trinidad and Tobago, Iran and Australia before retiring in 2008. He is now a Visiting Associate at the Centre for International Policy Studies at the University of Ottawa.

In 2007 he was appointed Canadian Ambassador to Iran during a very difficult time in our bilateral relations. When the two countries failed to agree on a reciprocal exchange of Ambassadors, Iran expelled him in December 2007.

While in Iran he traveled throughout the country and enjoyed meeting Iranian people from all walks of life. He is now writing a book about his experience. He writes and speaks about Iran in the Ottawa Citizen, the Globe and Mail, CBC and BBC Persian Service. His most recent article appeared in the Globe and Mail earlier this month when he criticized the Canadian Government for suspending diplomatic relations with Iran.

He has an undergraduate degree in economics and political science from Queen’s University in Kingston and an MBA from the University of Western Ontario.

John and his wife live near Ottawa in Merrickville, Ontario and have three children.

The title of his speech will be “Iran: The Prospects for Diplomacy.”
